Hello NM Registered Veterinary Technician Association members! Since their election, your 2021 board has been discussing the veterinary technician shortage, which has become an acute issue since the start of the pandemic, and some possible actions that we could be taking to help the technicians in our state to stay in the profession. Some of the ideas that have come up are pursuing changes in the Veterinary Practice Act to provide more support to technicians. Currently the practice act defines a veterinary technician as “a skilled person certified by the board as being qualified by academic and practical training to provide veterinary services under the supervision and direction of a licensed veterinarian who is responsible for the performance of that technician”. A registered veterinary technician and a veterinary assistant is not defined. The practice act also states that “no person shall perform or attempt to perform as a veterinary technician without first applying for and obtaining a certificate of qualification from the board of veterinary medicine as a veterinary technician and his employment registered in accordance with board regulation”, giving veterinary technicians title recognition but not title protection. It is definitely NOT our goal to make it harder for an uncredentialed “veterinary technician” to work in the field, but to standardize the knowledge and training necessary to be able to use the title of veterinary technician, and to protect our patients from unnecessary harm due to inadequate knowledge and/or training. Our board would like to hold a “town hall” style meeting for two purposes, to be able to get to know more of our members and to discuss your thoughts/experiences on these topics.
